Fall camp just started but UGA got some unexpected bad news today. Starting linebacker Brenton Cox was dismissed from the team and has entered the transfer portal.
ATHENS — Georgia football sophomore outside linebacker Brenton Cox has entered the transfer portal after parting ways with the Bulldogs.
The portal reflected the transaction early on Monday afternoon.
Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning provided a clue earlier Monday morning that something could be amiss with Cox.
When asked how Cox might contribute to the team this season, Lanning replied, “That’s a good question. I would leave that up to coach Smart at this time.”
Cox is a 6'4 outside linebacker who as a 5-star freshman last season played in 13 of 14 games with one start vs Texas in the Sugar Bowl. While Cox's stats were modest with 20 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and 3 pass breakups he was expected to get significant playing time as a potential starter this year.
Cox if you recall got into a little bit of trouble his freshman season with sophomore linebacker Robert Beal when they were busted with cannabis inside their dorm room by an RA. The two players were taken into police custody less than an hour before a UGA spring practice on April 2.

No word yet on where Cox could be looking to transfer to. The Lithonia, GA product was committed to Ohio State before flipping to UGA. If I had to guess where he ends up Auburn has a history of picking up talented discarded Dawgs.
