Well, shit. This isn't the greatest news coming out of week 1 for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team looking to get back into the playoffs. Head coach Brian Kelly informed us on what's going on with the football team in terms of injuries, transfers, and position changes. Go ahead and pull up a chair and sit down. This isn't pretty.
-Starting left tackle Blake Fisher is out for up to 8 weeks, possible more, from a torn meniscus. Fuck. Fisher already had surgery today for his knee. Michael Carmody is now the starting left tackle vs Toledo this week.
-Backup tight end Kevin Bauman has a fibula fracture. He's out for 6 weeks.
-LB Shayne Simon is out for the season with a torn labrum. Must have been all those arm tackles he tried unsuccessfully vs the Seminoles.
-Rover LB Paul Moala is out for the season with a torn achilles. He has now torn both of his achilles in less than two seasons. Poor kid has been snake bitten ever since he stepped foot on campus. His playing career could be over.
-LB/DE Jordan Botelho and RB C'Bo Flemister continue to be out because they are on double secret probation. In other words they are serving suspensions for off the field issues.
-RB Logan Diggs is back this week. He was probably out because of Covid but it's unconfirmed. Hopefully he can get some carries vs Toledo to lighten the load for starters Kyren Williams and Chris Tyree.
-Backup slot WR Lawrence Keys is no longer on the roster. Keys decided to quit the team and focus on graduating in December so he can move on to another school where he won't be featured.
-Sophomore WR Xavier Watts, whom I had big expectations coming into this season, has moved to Rover LB. Watts will now be the backup to Jack Kiser and Isaiah Pryor there for a rather depleted LB crew now missing Simon and Marist Liufia for the season due to injuries.
-Freshman LB Prince Kollie now moves to ILB to back up starter JD Bertrand. I'm very excited to see both of these guys play vs Toledo. Both are studs.
-Freshmen WRs Deion Colzie and Lorenzo Styles are now back ups to starters Kevin Austin and Braden Lenzy. Expect to see them vs Toledo and getting some valuable playing time. The coaching staff is very excited about both prospects.
-WR Joe Wilkins (who all he does is make plays including a TD catch vs FSU) is now the back up to senior Avery Davis with Keys quitting the football program.
So other than all that it's just been a rosy day for Coach Kelly and the Fighting Irish. Hopefully some of these injuries will be fast healing and we can see players like Fisher and Bauman back in October. The good news is gives other players (namely true freshmen) a chance to make an impression and shine for a team hoping to not skip a beat this young football season.
Here is the updated depth chart vs Toledo...
