TOP COLLEGE FOOTBALL WIDE RECEIVERS 2007

MATT FAIRCHILD DISCUSSES THE TOP RETURNING WIDE RECEIVERS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL

With the departures of star receivers such as Calvin Johnson, Jeff Samardzija, and Dwayne Jarrett it would seem difficult to match the talent and size they possessed. But in this year's crop of receivers we do have a true superstar in Desean Jackson to replace Johnson at the top and a slew of others who can all give the opposing secondary the worst case of shakes since Muhammad Ali.

1. Desean Jackson (California)-"Action Jackson" returns to Berkeley for his junior season and should be the Heisman frontrunner. Desean is a phenomenal athlete who is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball and is a joy to watch on Saturdays. It's just too bad by the time the Cal games rolls around I'm already more sauced than David Hasselhoff and Pat O'brien on a "Hog night" rampage in Vegas.

2. Mario Manningham (Michigan)-It's hard to explain your feeling for a guy when he personally destroys your favorite team as you curse and throw beer bottles at your television screen. But what Mario did last season to Notre Dame was a thing of beauty and very hard to swallow. He personally destroyed any chance of the Irish competing for a National Championship and showed the college football pundits he is a top 10 receiver. In fact he was so great we felt obligated to own up and bow down to Manningham and create a shirt for Super Mario.

3. Earl Bennett (Vanderbilt)-A first team All-SEC performer his first two seasons, Bennett may not get the recognition he deserves in terms of the spotlight but we have nothing but man love for him here at Sportscrack. Bennett is harder to cover than a Paris Hilton exposed flap jack and more lethal than a Mark May fart. I'm thinking 80 plus catches for over 1200 yards sounds about right.

4. Adarius Bowman (Oklahoma State)-Tall, fast, and incredibly strong all apply to this rising senior in Stillwater. A breakout performance in 2006 was just a scratch compared to the scars this manchild will give to opposing cornerbacks this season. A first round talent for sure, Bowman might be the best player in the Big 12 this season.

5. Harry Douglas (Louisville)-His name rolls off the tongue like it should appear in the opening credits of "Deep Throat" or "The Opening of Misty Beethoven." One of Brian Brohm's favorite targets, Harry should have a huge season and should help get the Cardinals back into a BCS bowl game in his senior season...as long as Douglas doesn't blow his wad too soon in order for the money shot.

6. Percy Harvin (Florida)-It doesn't matter whether you line this kid up at runningback, receiver, punt returner, or Lindsay Lohan's drug dealer he has the potential to score at all times. A track and field stud while in high school, Harvin stepped in last season and provided the Gators some much needed electricity in which he was named the SEC Freshman of the Year. He has all the tools to be a top receiver and a favorite target of the beast known as Tim Tebow.

7. DJ Hall (Alabama)-He isn't Forrest Gump but DJ knows how to get the Crimson Tide faithful off their seats. He had amazing games against LSU and Arkansas and should continue to get better while he develops more chemistry with QB John Parker Wilson.

8. Jarrett Dillard (Rice)-A finalist for the Biletnikoff Award along with Calvin Johnson and Jeff Samardzija last season, Dillard comes back along with his NCAA leading 21 touchdown catches. He caught a touchdown pass in every game last season establishing a new NCAA record and now is 2nd all time with a streak of 15 consecutive games with at least one touchdown catch. Rice wouldn't have come close to seven wins last season without Dillard.

9. Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma)-How in the hell did the Texas Longhorns let this stud go out of state against their arch rivals? Kelly tore up the Big 12 last season leading the Sooners in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches while earning All-Big 12 second team honors. He set Big 12 Championship game records with 10 catches and 142 yards against Nebraska. The 6'4 rising junior will have a huge season and will bolt for the NFL early.

10. Marcus Monk(Arkansas)-Monk is listed at 6'6 but with his wing span is more like a 7 foot receiver. Although he is light in terms of football weight (217 lbs in press guide) he has been bulking up to prepare for his senior season in which the Hogs will get everybody's best game. If he doesn't become more physical he will get slapped around like Chuck Liddell did on Saturday night.

HONORABLE MENTIONS-Limas Sweed (Texas), Sammie Stroughter (Oregon State), Davone Bess (Hawaii), Early Doucet (LSU), Mario Urratia (Louisville), Dorien Bryant (Purdue),
