MATT FAIRCHILD DISCUSSES THE TOP RETURNING GUN SLINGERS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL
This is the third edition of our preseason Sportscrack rankings of college quarterbacks and I must say this one has been the most difficult. The two previous seasons were easy picks for me as Matt
Leinart(2005) and Brady
Quinn(2006) were runaway preseason picks as the best QB in college. But this year is different. Narrowing it down from what we know(stats and previous performances) to what we don't know(potential and hype) is difficult and sometimes hard to predict which quarterback will have the best performance. This year alone I came up with 17 names from all across the nation including every major conference. Take a look and feel free to email hate mail if you disagree.
1. Colt Brennan (Hawaii)-Talk about a quarterback
who loves to hang loose, Brennan tore up the opposition in the land of paradise last season. He broke the NCAA single-season record for most touchdown passes (58) and also the two-season record (93), both formerly held by Houston's David Klingler. His passing efficiency of 186.0 also set a new NCAA record. He isn't a one trick pony who can just gun the football either. He showed the ability to tuck the ball and run for 5 touchdowns and 366 yards. The Colorado transfer and former high school backup to Matt Leinart at Mater Dei should have a huge season and be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy (finished 6th last season). He passed up a chance to enter the NFL draft because his "heart lies right here in Hawaii" and with hope of leaving a legacy for future Warriors.
2. Pat White (West Virginia)-White is the Jenna
Fischer of college football. Everybody knows her as Pam Beesly, the
office receptionist who tolerates her boss on "The Office." But what everybody
doesn't know is how hot she is in real life. The girl is a smoking hot babe
and exactly what Pat White is to West Virginia football in a non homosexual
way. Everybody pays attention to RB Steve Slaton but what we fail to recognize
is that White is the real superstar on the team. He can run (1219 yards and
18 TD's) and pass (65.9 % completion rate and 13 TD's) with the best in all
of college football. Michael Vick got all the attention at Virginia Tech
because he could do unfathomable things with his leg and arm when he wasn't banging whores and refereeing dog fights. White can do all those type of things in Morgantown yet he isn't a degenerate who hangs out with the wrong crowd (not yet at least). He will have a Heisman-worthy 2007 and get the Mountaineers back to the BCS.
3. Brian Brohm (Louisville)-Brohm it seems
will be the Matt Leinart and Brady Quinn of this year...in other words he will
be on every publication cover and people will start to nitpick his game because
they are idiots and they will say he is overexposed. He is good, really good as a matter of fact. The senior from Louisville is an accuracy machine (67.3%, 68.8%, 63.6% completion percentage so far) and has a strong NFL ready arm. With a new coach there could be an uncomfortable period of adjustment for Brohm (example: 4 interceptions in the Spring Game) but the kid is talented enough to adjust his game and has the weapons in All-American potential WR's Mario Urratia and Harry Douglas to throw for a ton of yards and touchdowns. Brohm would have been higher on this list but he can't stay healthy and doesn't have the ability to tuck and run like Brennan and White.
4. Andre' Woodson (Kentucky)-Woodson is this
year's Jamarcus Russell. No, not because he is an ogre of a QB with a howitzer
for an arm. Okay, yes, that is exactly why. This kid can ball with the best of them and really matured last season in leading Kentucky to their first bowl win since Abraham Lincoln was seen going down on Joshua Speed back in Springfield, IL. Shocking news on both accounts there. Woodson threw for 3515 yards and 31 TDs last season while only throwing 7 INTs. Great stats and a good head on his shoulders will make him a sure fire first round pick next season. If he beats Notre Dame in a bowl game then the legend will only grow and we can hear how he throws the ball "over that mountain there" and can crush bears with his enormous paws before he becomes the run away #1 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
5. Colt McCoy (Texas)-Replacing a legend as big as Vince Young is never an easy task but McCoy proved to be a more than an adequate replacement. With a completion percentage nearing 70% and a TD-to-INT ratio of 29 to 7, McCoy didn't play like a redshirt freshman. With a veteran team back including star players such as RB Jamaal Charles and WR Limas Sweed on the offensive side of the ball it will be very exciting to watch the Longhorns score a ton of points this season. With an early season schedule remenscient of Harlem Globetrotters matchups against the Washington Generals it shouldn't be surprising to see Colt get off to a scorching start and see ESPN Gameday jumping all over the Longhorn bangwagon.
6. Rudy Carpenter (Arizona State)-Rudy will be the first to admit he had some awful games last season after a spectacular freshman season. So why do I have him above such names as Booty and Henne? Because I am high? Nope, not yet. Because I am drunk? Getting there, but not quite. Because he has a better arm and will flourish under the tutelage of new coach Dennis Erickson? BINGO. Henne and Booty had the benefit of patrolling the field behind a good offensive line and some great receivers...Rudy not so much. The Arizona State football program was in shambles before the season started because of the QB controversy but should be ready to rock this season under the hired gun of Erickson. So in other words the Sun Devils will win 10 games and Erickson will dump the program for a more lucrative offer.
7. JD Booty (USC)-Booty is a really good QB and should have a great season behind a veteran line and a defense that should win them a lot of games. But if anyone wants to tell me that Booty is a serious Heisman contender needs to take their meds. Last year he had a completion percentage of 60% while throwing to studs Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett and he only got sacked 14 times behind a really good offensive line. I will give Booty credit because he waited his turn behind Leinart and is a good teammate but he isn't worth mentioning for top 5 QB's in college football. Just because you are on a great team (example: Troy Smith) doesn't make you the best player and Booty certainly isn't the best.
8. Chad Henne (Michigan)-Entering his fourth year starting at Michigan should have made this guy a hero among the Wolverine faithful but even they agree Henne hasn't hit his full stride. The kid is a really good QB but it doesn't seem like he has ever actually won a game for Michigan. What I mean is who would you rather have as your QB late in the fourth quarter, down by six? I would take a Brennan, White, Brohm, Woodson, and McCoy ahead of him easily because they are winners and leaders. Henne will be a winner at Michigan again this season, but I'm not so sure this guy is a born leader. If I was Henne I would throw the ball to Super
Mario Manningham at least ten times a game.
9. Nathan Longshore (Cal)-Longshore was a first year starter last season and played good but not great. Completing over 60% of your passes is good but a lot of people including coach Jeff Tedford expect Longshore to take the next step this year. Having weapons such as Desean Jackson and Justin Forsett only helps and I wouldn't be surprised if Longshore has a Heisman-worthy season. I'm thinking 30 plus TDs with less than 10 INTs sounds about right.
10. Tim Tebow (Florida)-National Championship: Check! Milk tits McGee: Yeah, Big double check on that one! What else does Tebow have to prove other than actually lead a team to victory? Oh yeah, a lot. "The Chosen One" as they call him down south has the moxie and intestinal fortitude (big journalism words used to describe porn stars by the way) to lead the Gators back to another National Championship. This season would be a stretch. 2008 they should be the favorite. I got the urge for a warm glass of silicone...I mean milk.
Honorable mentions-Erik Ainge (Tennessee), Brandon Cox (Auburn), Chase Daniel
(Missouri), Graham Harrell (Texas Tech), Sam Keller
(Nebraska), Matt Ryan (Boston College)
